MTL® provides better wear protection in most manual transmissions which call for an Automatic Transmission Fluid which can be very important in racing applications. I used the MaxLife in my 1997 (236.10) as a test/flush fluid and it was fine, but switching to Red Line D4 made a noticeable improvement. I'd highly recommend the D4 for any 236.10 tranny, and it's $11/qt with free shipping at Amazon. I would use the D6 for a 236.12 application.

Tremec suggests Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF that is certified to Dexron IIIG, and IIIH. Red Line D4 is just Dexron III. I have always had good luck with AMSOIL in the past but I am not sure if the G and H modifier make a big difference. I think ATF with calcium sulfonate is the way to go. While WS contains calcium sulfonate, Amsoil LV ATF, Redline D4, and Maxlife ATF contain more of it as well as AW/EP additives that are P and B-based. I guess this is why Redline folks hint D4 is better fluid compared to D6 for WS application, even though it's a thicker fluid.
